Creativity Series: CREATE!

Now, as you can tell from my last post, I am all for making a plan. But, if, in the midst of a project your muse calls you in another direction, go with it! This is art people! The creative mind is the powerful mind. But you have to have the guts to follow your intuition. Many of my best pieces have come out of abandoned plans. For example, my last summer in college. I was painting 40 hours a week, and working on a huge series of works centering on a limited palette, burlap "pods" "growths" and "births" coming out from the substrate. After what seemed like 40 of these, and not having any breakthrous, I opened up my palette to a few more colors, made stricter geometry, and got rid of the grotesque. And the paintings are AMAZING. Definitely my favorite work. The creation process cannot be strapped down into a plan, but plans help you have a place to start.

The photo above is me, on graduation day, standing in front of the most amazing in this series (Entitled "Through the Looking Glass.") This painting is 36x48 inches of wonderfulness. Be proud of your work! You earned it!

When was the last time your well laid plans went another way while creating a piece?

Making Progress

I feel like I'm learning valuable skills on this first crazy quilt. I may enter all my quilts from this year into the Show in October. Hopefully it will be several! It will be nice to participate and see them shown off. I'm working still on the more colorful quilt. I have a large portion of the machine quilting done, and am going back in to the other sections in a loop-de-spiral pattern. Hey, that's a good name for it! I haven't drawn in several days, but the quilting is creative work at any rate. Drawing is still on my mind. I'm thinking of doing a big drawing of the fence post photo. It is such a striking photo, that I think a drawing would be just lovely, frameable, artwork.
